Is Green Gables Learning a daycare center?
Green Gables Learning serves families who have the intention of homeschooling their children when they become school age. Children ages four through nine have the option of attending classes two, three, or four days per week so that they may spend time with their parents educating them when they are not at Green Gables. Parents are their child’s teacher in the eyes of the state where homeschooling is concerned.
We prioritize building a strong foundation for academic learning, teaching social-emotional skills, and cultivating nature appreciation.
We operate as a private membership association with families in agreement with our policies.
Is Green Gables Learning a Forest School?
Our staff is not forest school certified. Children who attend our classes spend time outside in nature every day when weather permits. They are given the opportunity to explore their surroundings free of adult intrusion in the forest, creeks, gardens, and outdoor play spaces. Adults are present to supervise and to assist with occasional peer conflict. We introduce nature topics weekly using the curriculum “Exploring Nature with Children” as a guide.
Do you teach art and music during homeschool classes?
We have a craft project each week based on the nature theme from “Exploring Nature with Children.” Children receive guidance creating a finished product that they can take home and display.
We sing several learning songs every morning that help children learn basic calendar, counting, alphabet, rhyming, social-emotional, and geography skills and concepts. We have a rhythm circle to promote listening, learning to play rhythm instruments, and the joy of music.
What is your policy on electronics?
Screens and devices are not allowed. We promote face-to-face interaction, real-life experiences, and hands-on learning. Virtual learning is not included in our classes.
Is Green Gables Learning a religious organization?
Parents are the highest authority in a child’s life and are responsible for teaching children their personal beliefs until they are old enough to form their own. We acknowledge that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. We operate from specific principles which are based on the values of personal responsibility, kindness, honesty, and integrity.
Are parents required to volunteer, donate, or raise funds?
There is never any obligation to give of time or resources. Family gatherings, field trips, and events are purely optional.
There are no hidden costs. Fees and curriculum requirements are clearly stated at the time of enrollment.
There are links on or website if anyone wishes to give donations, and while they are very much appreciated, they are never requested or expected from our families.
What Is Your Philosophy of Education?
We use best practice methods to teach the fundamentals- reading, spelling, grammar, writing, and penmanship. We teach print and cursive. Children learn best with a multi-sensory, hands-on approach. Active student engagement is the key to success, and it makes learning fun! We sing, move, recite, and count daily to cement concepts and facts into the long-term memory. Classic children’s literature selections are the basis of our reading lessons. Writing with pencil and paper is proven to promote cognitive function, creativity, and thought articulation. Simplicity is best when teaching young children basic skills and concepts.
